Rhode Island Theft, Grand Larceny, and Burglary — Crimes of theft can range from obtaining by false pretense, larceny, burglary, or embezzlement. Under Rhode Island  law it is unlawful for anyone to feloniously steal, take or carry away the personal property of another. Theft can also be the fraudulent appropriation of property entrusted to you, as well as defrauding a person of personal property, real property, money or labor by false or fraudulent representation or pretense. There are two classifications for theft; petty theft and grand theft. Grand theft may be classified as either a felony or a misdemeanor and is punishable by up to one year in county jail or state prison. Petty theft is classified as a misdemeanor and is punishable by fine or imprisonment in the county jail for up to six months.
